The Favor (NR)
Frank Wood,Ryan Donowho - 110 min.
photoFrank Wood turns in a powerful, understated performance as Lawrence Hull, a middle-aged bachelor who lives a quiet existence with his dog in Bayonne, New Jersey, and works as a pet photographer and a clerk at the local police station. When his high-school "sweetheart" calls him one day, Lawrence's life takes on a new dimension and romantic memories come to life. He reconnects with the now-divorced Caroline, but loses her all over again when she dies in a freak accident shortly after. Lawrence forms an unexpected attachment to her son, a 16-year-old malcontent named Johnny, and decides to adopt the boy to prevent him from going into foster care. Lawrence tries hard to be a father to Johnny, but Johnny wants nothing to do with him. Johnny dabbles in drug use and theft, exhibits behavioral problems at school, and hides behind a wall of anger and silence. His only soft spot is for a pretty neighborhood girl named Mariana, with whom he develops a relationship. Eventually Johnny comes to recognize that Lawrence is the father figure he has been searching for.

The Memory Thief (NR)
Mark Webber,Rachel Miner - 94 min.
photoLukas is an aimless, haunted young man working as a tollbooth clerk when a chance encounter with a Holocaust survivor suddenly ignites an obsession with the survivors and their horrific recollections of evil. At first, Lukas's newfound interest seems harmless enough--he works at a foundation taping the video testimony of Holocaust victims, and befriends a young Jewish woman named Mira, whose father is also a Holocaust survivor. Adler turns in a fantastic performance as a man determined not to relive his past, and Webber is alternately fascinating and frightening as he embarks on a bizarre quest to create a new persona for himself based on the survivors' memories and experiences. Like Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Lukas is consumed by the darkness he claims to reject, and his chilling descent into the abyss echoes the shocking reality of the Holocaust itself.

Jai Abberton,Koby Abberton
- 86 min.
photo"Bra Boys" documents the cultural evolution of the inner-Sydney beach-side suburb of Maroubra and the social struggle of its youth--the tattooed and much maligned surf community known as the Bra Boys. Explores their success in professional big wave surfing, their international reputation for hard partying and rough justice, and touches on their running battle with authorities. The film shows their absolute reliance on one another to fit into a society in which they are displaced and, at times, disinterested. Follows how the evolution of Maroubra, coupled with the historical stigma associated with Australia's rebellious surf community, has contributed to their social displacement.
